Police say they have arrested one man in connection with the killing of a fisherman on Thursday morning, in the vicinity of the Number 65 Village Koker in Corentyne, Berbice.
INews was told that the now dead man, who was known only as ‘shetty’ has been positively identified as Davanand Jailall, 38, of Lot 578 Block 8, Agriculture Road, East Coast Demerara.
The suspect, now assisting with investigations, is known only as “Boy”. He is 45-year-old and said to be from Rose Hall, Berbice.
This online publication was told that Jailall and “Boy” were both employed by a 49-year-old fisherman.
Based on police information, the alleged murder occurred at around 11:00hrs on the day in question.
Jailall was reportedly on board his employer’s fishing vessel, smoking an illegal substance while cooking.
He was then approached by “Boy” who informed him that employees were not allowed to smoke in the boat. As such, the suspect reportedly asked Jailall to leave the vessel if he intends to continue smoking.
The now dead man allegedly refused to do so, and according to an eyewitness at the scene, “Boy” became enraged and picked up a “brown handle knife” which was lying nearby and dealt Jailall stabs 10 stab wounds to his neck, lip, left side face, left ear, left shoulder, left arm, and left palm.
“Boy” then reportedly dropped the knife in the fishing vessel and fled the scene.
He was later apprehended and the knife used to kill Jailall has been lodged.
The body of the deceased is presently at the Skeldon Hospital Mortuary.
Investigations are in progress.
