A 36-year-old maid was on Wednesday jailed for 18 months after she pleaded guilty to stealing from her employer.
Shaundel Williams, of Lot 59 Russel Street, Charlestown accepted the larceny charge which stated that on December 27, 2015 at 168 Durban Backlands, she stole three diamond earrings valued $361,000 and $60,000 cash from her employer Gem Nascimento.
The charge was read by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. The Court heard that Williams was employed by Nascimento for over four years and when arrested, she refused to say why she committed the offence. According to information received, the defendant made a report to the Police that her employer’s home had been broken into and that the articles were missing. An investigation was launched and when Police attempted to question the maid, she acted nervous and refused to cooperate.
Police then conducted a search of the woman’s home where they discovered the earrings and a quantity of other jewellery in a purse. She admitted to stealing the items when arrested.
The Magistrate sentenced her to 18 months telling her that she was placed in a position of trust and should not have committed the brazen act.
