[www.inewsguyana.com] – Minister within the Local Government Ministry, Norman Whittaker says the holding Local Government Elections is not dependent on the recently enacted local government bills.
At a press conference, Whittaker explained that nothing in the constitution demands that the amendments that were recently passed are a necessary pre-requisite to the holding of such elections.
His statement, however, is contrary to what government has been saying in relation to the holding of local government elections. It appears as if Whittaker is ignorant of the reasons put forward by his own Government as to why these elections have not been held since 1994. The reason why the four local government Bills were tabled and subsequently passed in the National Assembly is solely for the holding of local government elections.
Meanwhile, following the Minister’s shocking statement, he said that Local Government elections are still high on the agenda and the Ministry is very serious about it. However, the Bills are yet to be assented to by President Donald Ramotar.
