Linden man remanded for possession of firearm, ammo

[www.inewsguyana.com] – A 50 – year – old labourer was today remanded to prison by Magistrate Fabayo Azore for unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition.

Oswald Europe of Central Amelia’s Ward, Linden pleaded not guilty to the charge, which alleged that on Monday, September 22 at Mousi Backdam, he had in his possession one .38 revolver when he was not the holder of a firearm license.

He also denied the second charge, which alleged that on the same day at Mousi Backdam, he also had in his possession 13 matching live rounds of ammunition.

The Court heard that on the day in question the defendant was driving a motorcycle when he was stopped by the Police. With his permission, a search was carried out on his person and the weapon containing six live rounds was found in his pants crotch and the seven remaining ammunition was found from his pants pocket.

Based on these circumstances, Police Prosecutor Jomo Nichols opposed bail on the prevalence, nature and gravity of the offence.

Representing the defendant was Attorney – at – Law, Gordon Gilhuys, who told the Court that his client was transporting persons from the Backdam and was found with the items at the same time that he was about to lodge it at the Madhia Police Station.

The defendant was remanded to prison until October 20 at the Madhia Magistrate’s Court.
