[www.inewsguyana.com] – Workers from the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, assisted by those from the Demerara Harbour Bridge, have commenced extensive repairs to the Liliendaal/Patterson Bridge on the Railway Embankment.
The repair is slated to be concluded on Monday, June 15 and is costing government approximately $12.3 million. Morris Alfred, a welding foreman attached to the Demerara Harbour Bridge, explained that the repair is necessary, given the fact that the broken panel has the potential of causing the structure to buckle under pressure.
The repair will include the removal and replacing of the diamond panels, pile driving and the replacing of the asphalt on the structure. The preliminary works is being conducted by the ministry while the Harbour Bridge is tasked with conducting the internal works.
The repair has resulted in the closure of the Railway Embankment between Conversation Tree to the west and to the University of Guyana Road to the east. [Leroy Smith]
