Nomination Day for the upcoming local government polls is January 26.
Those who will be participating at Local Government Elections (LGE) are required to present their Lists of Candidates to the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) on Nominations Day. They are, however, expected to submit their List of Candidates to the respective returning officers in the 71 local government organs for the March 18 elections.
All parties contesting are required by statute to submit a symbol for approval by GECOM prior to Nominations Day. GECOM explained that any List of Candidates submitted by any groups on Nomination Day without the required pre-approved symbol, will be deemed defective and the defaulting party would be deemed ineligible from contesting the LGE.
Guyana has 585 constituencies within the 71 organs.
