More than three months after having some gall stones removed via surgery, a 47-year-old woman of Lethem, Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) is still to regain consciousness and her family members are worried sick that she may never recover. The woman’s condition has even caused her husband to be in and out of hospital, as his blood pressure has been soaring since her illness.

According to relatives, Thelma Rebeiro had first undergone a surgery at the Lethem Hospital after she was diagnosed with gall stones.

However, something went wrong during the surgery and, as such, Rebeiro was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital. Four days later, another surgery was conducted. However, since the operation, the woman has not regained consciousness.

In fact, according to family members, they were told by doctors that there was nothing more that they could do for her. The family said Rebeiro was later discharged from the hospital, still in an unconscious state. However, the Hospital’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Mitzy Campbell said that it was the family who requested that the woman be discharged.
She said they had made plans for her to seek treatment in Boa Vista, Brazil. It was with that in mind that the request for discharge was granted. Rebeiro is mother to several children, most of whom live in neighbouring Brazil. However, the family were at a loss as to their next move as their loved one lay unconscious day after day.
