A labourer met his demise in the wee hours of Sunday after he was driven over by a motorcar along the One Mile Public Road, Wismar Linden.
Dead is 25-year-old Intiaz Muhammad of Tuschen Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo.
Based on reports received, a hire car bearing registration number HC 8814 driven by Jermaine Jackson of Wisrock Linden was proceeding along the One Mile Public Road when the driver alleged that a vehicle was proceeding in the opposite direction with bright lights, thus he became blinded.
As such, he claimed that he drove over Muhammad who was lying at the side of the road. He reportedly stopped for a while but drove away.
However, Muhammad was picked up by an ambulance and taken to the Linden Hospital Complex where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Based on Police investigations, the driver was arrested and is being questioned in relation to the accident.
The motor car was impounded as Police continue their investigations. This accident occurred one day after Police Commissioner Leslie James warned drivers against fleeing from accident scenes.
The Top Cop warned all drivers who are involved in accidents to abstain from driving away from the scene, especially when persons are injured.
He made that statement on Friday after observing that, despite being unharmed, persons are leaving accident scenes to avoid any culpability for their actions.
“If you are involved in an accident, Police stations are spread across our country. Make a report to the nearest Police station. It’s a stance we’ve taken, and we’ll be addressing this matter seriously,” James warned.
