A laboratory technician attached to the Bartica Hospital was today remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan when he appeared before her on illegal gun possession charges.
Shemroy Peters, 32, of Bartica denied the allegation which stated that on Sunday, March 20 at Itaballi Police Check Point, Mazaruni River he had in his possession a 9mm Smith and Western pistol without being the holder of a firearm license.
Peters also pleaded not guilty to the charge which read that on the same occasion, he had in his possession 7 live rounds of 9mm ammunition.
According to reports, at about 11:00h on Sunday, Police ranks conducted a search on a man at the Itabali Checkpoint, Mazaruni, during which an unlicensed 9mm. pistol with 7 rounds was found. He was arrested and an investigation was launched, hence the present charge.
Peters, who was unrepresented, made an application for bail which was denied. He was remanded and the matter was transferred to Bartica Magistrate’s Court for April 8.
