The Guyana Prison Service aided by the Joint Services conducted an operation at the Georgetown Prisons on Saturday, May 14, 2016.
In a press release issued this afternoon, the GPS stated that the aim of the exercise was to remove all prohibited articles within the prison, inclusive of weapons, drugs and cellular phones, if any. The exercise commenced at 05:00 hours and all of the Joint Services ranks assigned to the operation were briefed on the objectives before the operation commenced.
According to the statement, the inmates were addressed by the Director of Prisons (ag), Mr. Carl Grahame, DSM, who urged them to cooperate with all instructions given during and after the operation. During the operation thirteen (13) prisoners were transferred to the different prison locations and a number of prohibited articles were unearthed.
The operation concluded at 18:30 hours without any incident.
