[www.inewsguyana.com] – The 24th edition of the Kashif and Shanghai football tournament kicked off Sunday afternoon at the Georgetown Cricket Club Ground with a grand ceremony.
During the opening, Minister of Sport Dr. Frank Anthony said that this is a new era in the sport of football and praised the organizer for having the development of the game in their hearts.
He indicated that they are looking to work in tandem with the Kashif and Shanghai Organization in an effort to develop the sport at the grass root level.
President of the Guyana Football Federation Christopher Matthias said tournaments such as these are key for the continued growth of the sport. Tournament Co – Founder Kashif Mohammed said that despite the challenges of holding the tournament, the organization is committed to the future of football in Guyana for many years to come.
The champion school in the tournament will pocket $1.2 million, 75 percent of which will be used to finance a project identified by the school. The second, third and fourth placed finishers will receive $750,000, $500,000 and $250,000, 25 percent of which will be used for a project at those schools.
The most valuable player will be the recipient of a laptop, as well as a one-month stint with a top club in Trinidad and Tobago.
The tournament will conclude on New Year’s Day 2014 with the grand final.
