Guyanese artiste, Jumo ‘Rubber Waist’ Primo has been named one of the contestants shortlisted to perform at the semifinals of the Chutney Soca Monarch in Trinidad and Tobago on January 9, 2016. His tune, ‘Off the Rocks’ was selected from a total of 150 songs that were screened by a judging panel.
The song is collaboration between him and Rikki Jai and has been creating some buzz. However, the 2016 leg has seen the largest number of entries for the Chutney Soca Monarch.
More than 150 selections were screened at a closed session on Monday, December 28, 2015.
Of the 150 screened, 49 songs were selected from both the Traditional and Chutney Soca formats, and these songs will now move to the Semi Final stage at the FunSplash Water Park in Debe, scheduled for Saturday, January 9, 2016.
This will be the first time in the 21-year history of Chutney Soca Monarch that the semifinal round is being held in Debe, South Trinidad.
Some notable new faces at the Semi Final round of Chutney Soca Monarch, crossing from the soca stages will be Destra, Third Bass, Terry Seales and R Raj Kumar of ‘Chromatics’ fame.
‘Team Raja’, made up of Rikki Jai and Ravi B, winners of last year’s Chutney Soca Monarch competition will not be defending their crown at this year’s competition. However, they have both entered as single acts.Both Rikki Jai and Ravi B will now be required to compete at all levels to qualify for the Grand Final.
