[www.inewsguyana.com] – The Guyana Press Association (GPA) says it has noted with “concern” a recent call by Opposition Leader, Bharrat Jagdeo for supporters of the opposition People’s Progressive Party to refrain from buying newspapers which do not support the views of the party.
“Please ensure that our people don’t buy newspapers where the sole purpose of the newspaper is to destroy your party,” Mr Jagdeo said at an event on October 5, 2015.
A statement issued by the GPA on Tuesday, October 20, 2015 described Jagdeo’s statement as “dangerous and instructive.”
According to the statement, “Dangerous, because it highlights the fact that Mr Jagdeo is bent on stifling the growth and operations of the media, something which he brazenly practiced as President when he withdrew state advertisements from the Stabroek News. Instructive, because Mr Jagdeo’s missive demonstrates that he understands the powerful role of the free press.”
The GPA noted that Jagdeo’s statement is “designed to stifle the revenue base of the privately-owned media and frustrates their efforts to provide the populace with news and information.”
“The Guyana Press Association condemns Mr Jagdeo’s statement and that of any other politician or official who attempts to thwart the work of the free press. The media in Guyana continues to be the watchdog of our democratic processes and the Guyana Press Association rallies around a free and independent press.”
According to the media body, the Executive of the Guyana Press Association urges all media workers to continue to seek truth and report it fearlessly.

I never met Prez Granger but I have the feeling he does not have the word “arrogant” in his vocabulary and will try do what’s best for Guyana and not focus on his ministers and buddies having more Pradavilles. I have been a PPP supporter all my life and I think their priority should be on their own house-cleaning rather than simply trying to distract people by barking at everything the government is trying to do. For starters, Jagdeo should move out, take a page from Stephen Harrper, Canadian PM, most people had enough of him and he just couldn’t or didn’t want to see it that way. With Jagdeo out, the government and the people in general will have more respect for the opposition and thus all Guyana will be better off.

Freedom of press is to speak truth. Media should be unbiased and work with dignity. When we don’t have such things, such call by the leaders is acceptable.
Sensational news and one sided journalism will face risk of a section of the mass rejecting that particular media and further divide the society in large.
