The Guyana Fire Service has launched an investigation into the cause of a fire which destroyed a house at Tuschen Scheme, East Bank Essequibo this morning.

Reports indicate that the fire started sometime around 09:00h at the Lot 37 Tuschen Old Scheme, East Bank Essequibo house.

Inews was informed that the disastrous blaze reportedly started in the kitchen area of the wooden two story home and quickly engulfed the building, destroying the upper flat and leaving an apartment below only partially damaged.

A woman and her four children, all below the age of 10 occupied the upper flat of the house. However, at the time of the fire, only three of the children were at home with their mother.

One of the tenants who occupied the lower flat of the building related to this online publication  that she was doing laundry when she heard one of the children shouting for his mother followed by screams from the woman.

When Inews visited, the woman had already taken her children and left for a relative’s home, a few villages away.

Meanwhile, the owner of the house, Claudette Singh related that she was at home, one street away, when someone informed her about the fire.

According to the landlady, the family in the upper flat had moved in last October and the husband is currently in the interior working.
