As Guyana celebrates 178 years of the arrival of East Indians to these shores, Indian Culture International (ICI) will host a grand event titled ‘Indian Arrival Fest 2016” on May 5 on the lawns of the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, Lilendaal, Greater Georgetown.
The day’s proceedings will see various cultural activities being performed by members of the Indian Cultural Centre; a Dragon Dance by the Chinese Dance Troupe; and presentations by Guyana’s Leading Indian Orchestra, Shakti Strings and Troupe.
There will also be performances by members of the Ishara Dance Troupe, Nach Gaana, Jewan Ka Nritya Dance Troupe, Shelitta Dance Troupe and Apsara Dance Troupe. In addition, there will be Tassa drumming and Tadja Drums.
The programme will also feature some of Guyana’s leading singers, including Celia Samaroo and Sookranie Boodhoo, Prince JP, Rajesh Dubraj, Aarti Sookhai, Pooran Seeraj, Steven Ramphal and others.
In addition, a wide variety of Indian, Chinese, local, international and fast foods and beverages will be on sale.
Even though this event could be billed as an international one, as an incentive for Guyana’s Golden Jubilee celebration, the admission fee has been reduced by 50 per cent and will now see patrons paying $500.
The ICI group started hosting events to celebrate Indian Arrival Day in 1989. Things however, changed after the introduction of the Indian Arrival Committee. The group is now certain that there will be a level playfield when planning and implementing cultural activities to promote Guyana’s rich cultural diversities. (Guyana Times)
