A 3-month pregnant Jamaican woman was remanded to prison when she appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, earlier today.
Carlene Grant pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on September 17, 2016 in Essequibo, she had in her possession 629g of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
Her Attorney highlighted to the court that she was staying illegally in Guyana as she overstayed after being granted six months in the country.
Grant’s reason for overstaying is that she had struck up a relationship with a Guyanese man.
Her attorney also stated that she had no prior convictions in her birth country, Jamaica.
However, the prosecution objected on the grounds that Grant was not a legal resident in Guyana.
The defendant was remanded to prison and is expected to return to court on September 26, 2016.
