The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention at Liliendaal, should be completed by the weekend.

Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony, made this disclosure during Tuesday’s COVID-19 Update.

“This week we should be able to substantially complete Ocean View. Most of the things are in place and the staff at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation and the contractors are trying to finish off the ICU, so by the end of the week we should have substantially completed the facilities there.”

The Minister said the next step would be to transport patients across to the new facility, which was built as the first specialised health facility in the Caribbean to cater to patients of epidemics.

“The ICU would be able to accommodate between 25 to 29 beds, which is quite a large amount because our current capacity at Georgetown Public Hospital is around 14. So, we’ll have a substantially bigger ICU and all the medical personnel and everybody would be available at the facility.”

Overall, the facility can hold up to 102 beds. The decision to establish a COVID-19 hospital stemmed from a recommendation made by PAHO/WHO. [Extracted and Modified from the Department of Public Information]
