A home and several businesses were on Tuesday morning destroyed, following a fire of unknown origin on a building on Charlotte Street, between Camp and Alexander Streets, Georgetown.

Based on information received, the building belonged to Jocelyn Dow, who is the Manager of Liana Cane Furniture store. Dow reportedly lived in the upper flat of the building.

A shipping company, a salon and another store occupied the lower flat.

Inews understands that around 05:00hrs today, Dow was awoken by the smell of smoke and the ringing of fire alarms attached to the building. Upon inspection, the woman realized that the lower flat was on fire.

However, due the fact that the fire was spreading rapidly throughout the two storey wooden structure, Dow told media operatives that she was only able to save herself and two of her dogs. She said her other animals were killed in the fire.

The fire service was contacted and Fire Chief, Marlon Gentle posited that the firefighters worked diligently in containing the disastrous fire to one building.

Investigations are ongoing.
