[www.inewsguyana.com] – Chief of Party for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), funded Guyana Leadership and Democracy Programme (LEAD), Glenn Bradbury, today, met with the Leader of the Opposition, David Granger and a team of officials representing A Partnership for National Unity (APNU).

According to a statement from the APNU, Mr. Bradbury used the opportunity to inform Brigadier Granger and his team of the new construct of the LEAD project. He also informed the APNU representatives of the local government town-hall meetings that are being conducted nationwide by LEAD.

“The discussion between the two sides centered on the need for local government elections and the importance of local democracy. The breakdown of the local government system nationwide was cited as the root cause for the lack of services, poor infrastructure and public health crisis affecting municipalities and local authority areas. Leader of the Opposition, Brigadier Granger said that the Partnership was committed to ensuring that local government elections are held. He said that APNU would continue its protest actions until President Donald Ramotar announce a date for local government elections,” the APNU stated noted.

Granger was accompanied to the meeting by Dr. Rupert Roopnarine, Vice Chairman, APNU; Ms. Amna Ally, APNU Chief Whip; Mr. Joseph Harmon, General Secretary APNU and Shadow Minister Public Infrastructure; Mr. Ronald Bulkan, Shadow Minister Local Government; Mr. Winston Felix, Shadow Minister Public Security; and Mr. Mark Archer, APNU Director of Communications.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) funded International Republican Institute (IRI) officially launched the Guyana Leadership and Democracy Programme (LEAD) project last Wednesday evening, which is expected to bolster the functioning of the National Assembly.
