[www.inewsguyana.com] – As a result of the vessel slamming into the Demerara Harbour Bridge (DHB) on Sunday morning (January 6), the Management is now forced to cease traffic on the bridge from Wednesday evening until Thursday morning.
At a press conference on Monday, January 6, it was announced that the DHB will be closed from 22:00hrs on January 8 to 4:00 am on January 9.
There has been no cost to the damaged structure which includes the compromising of the anchorage of the bridge and two clusters.
The vessel which slammed into the Bridge was being piloted by a local pilot while the vessel is an internationally registered one. iNews understands that moments before slamming into the Bridge, the Pilot told the traffic controller, “I know what I doing.”
An investigation into the incident is being handled by the Maritime Administration Department. General Manager of the Bridge, Rawlston Adams has reported that this latest incident is the most serious within the last five years. [Leroy Smith]
