A mechanical engineer attached to the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) was yesterday killed after he was struck down by a speeding minibus along the West Coast Berbice (WCB) public road.
Okechi Farley, 48, was riding a motorcycle at the time of the accident.
Farley was riding his motorcycle along the No 29 Village public road when a minibus which was driving at a fast rate of speed attempted to overtake another vehicle but ended up hitting him.
Farley sustained several head and body injuries and would have died on the spot. Nevertheless, he was picked up and taken to the Fort Wellington Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
After hitting the motorcyclist, the driver of the minibus lost control and crashed into a utility pole. This led to several passengers sustaining injuries.
The injured persons were taken to the Fort Wellington Hospital where they were treated for minor injuries. The driver of the minibus was arrested and is assisting the Police in their investigations.
Farley was also a pastor. He was also said to be a lecturer at the GuySuCo Training Centre at Port Mourant, Corentyne, Berbice.
