The Ajeenkya DY Patil University Turkeyen (Inc), currently under construction, is slated to be completed early next year and be ready to welcome its first batch of students by July 2018.
The School of Medicine is looking to build on its international networks and areas of expertise and deliver high-quality learning opportunities. It will deliver vocational and professional programmes that enable learners to meet and exceed their aspirations, ensuring that each individual achieves to the best of their ability.
According to the principals of the first-ever University School of Medicine, the facility will provide a ladder of opportunity for all learners, enabling them to progress onto further learning and into employment.
The University is geared at assuming a central role in the educational, cultural and economic life of Guyana and the Region.
“We will work closely with all the stakeholders to ensure that there is a wide range of learning opportunities within the University and these will be available to all,” its principals said.
The self-financed institution aims to establish and run innovative educational programmes at the tertiary level leading to Bachelor’s, Master’s and doctoral degrees in the domain of medical and health sciences.
The University School of Medicine said it will initiate international linkages with leading Universities across the world; deliver world-class curriculum using established international benchmarks and standards; and attract, develop and retain academic staff of the highest international calibre and make the Ajeenkya DY Patil University of Turkeyen employer of choice for all staff in the international, national and local environments.
The University is looking to also tap into the much-vaunted area of medical tourism.
According to proposals seen by this publication, the University School of Medicine will be looking to approach Government for permission to build housing complexes, clinics and hospitals, and provide medical treatments to foreign patients and their relatives under medical tourism.
The University School of Medicine says by next year, it will be offering Student Exchange Programmes with mainly US institutions for medical and nursing students; joint degree programmes with United States and United Kingdom-based institutions in nursing, dentistry, allied health and pharmacy programmes as well as recognition by National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation (NCFMEA), US Department of Education.
Under the University School of Medicine, students will also be eligible to access special loan programmes from North America.
The University is expected to maintain complete control over all academic programmes development, course teaching and training along with permission to grant graduate and post-graduate degrees in medical and health sciences.
News of the impressive and expansive three-storey building built at the cost of hundreds of millions of dollars to house the facility, was featured in the press back in 2015. The building is in its final stage of construction as the necessary equipment for the laboratories, among other areas, has already been sourced and is about to be shipped to Guyana.
The DY Patil Group has put in place all the resources and arrangements – human and material – to ensure the sustainability of the wide-ranging project in Guyana. The centrepiece of the University’s offerings will be the medical school incorporating all the latest pedagogical tools of the 21st Century.
The University, accredited by the National Accreditation Council (NAC) of Guyana, is a subsidiary of the DY Patil Group, one of the largest private educators in India, with branches in several other countries.
The DY Patil Group was established in 1983 and its activities span the fields of education, healthcare, agriculture and sports. It owns the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai where international cricket and football games are hosted. It has over 180 institutes of learning in three universities based out of the cities of Navi Mumbai, Pune and Kolhapur in India. The Group runs three medical colleges and hospitals with a capacity of over 6000 beds.
The management of the DY Patil Group projects that a large percentage of its student base will originate from outside Guyana and that there will be concessionary rates for Guyanese students.
Overall, there will be a substantial inflow of foreign currency into Guyana in addition to raising the international profile of Guyana in international markets, especially the fast-growing Asian, African, and North American economies.
