[www.inewsguyana.com] – Another dominant performance by Guyana has seen them qualify in fine style for the semi finals of the NAGICO West Indies Cricket Board 50 over competition on Tuesday evening (February 4), following a 22 run win over defending champions – the Windwards.
Batting first and without the services of durable left hander Shivnarine Chanderpaul, the Guyanese mustered 235 for the loss of 7 wickets.
Trevon Griffith was the first to depart when the score was three after failing after four deliveries to get off the mark, but the innings was steadied by his opening partner Assad Fudadin, who made 51 and the number three batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan who plundered 62 runs.
After both Sarwan and Fudadin departed in the space of two overs, Captain Christopher Barnwell took the charge to the defending champions, falling into the t20 style slobber knocker with a whirlwind 51 of 43 delivers.
He was not let down by Leon Jhonson who blasted 41 from 31 in an attempt to step on the gas during the last 10 overs.
In the end, Mervin Matthews four wickets coupled with two from Delorn Johnson and one from Johnson Charles were the highlights of the bowling.
In their batting innings, Charles who soaked up most of the first innings partnership strike took the score to 35-1 before the first wicket of his partner Devon Smith fell for five.
The only other substantial score in the innings was 33 from Keddy Lespordis as the innings faltered on 213 all out in 16.6 overs.
Man of the Match Ransford Beaton and Veerasammy Permaul each bagged three wickets each in an innings that gave the Malta Supreme Team their semi final spot.
Devindra Bishoo secured two wickets to add to his tally while one each was picked up by Paul Wintz and Christopher Barnwell.
Guyana and Jamaica by virtue of wins have qualified for the next round and will play the next game to decide who tops the table on February 8.
