[www.inewsguyana.com] – Guyana produced their second win of the 2014 Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in Vera Cruz, Mexico by defeating Jamaica in a consolation hockey game.
With their fates already sealed, Guyana and Jamaica battled in the blazing sun with the Guyanese girls seemingly in better rhythm than their last couple of games.
However, with the Jamaicans attacking relentlessly in the first half, Guyana had to rely on their defence to hold the fort.
Guyana would find their attacking groove in the second half missing a number of opportunities only for the game to end in a nil all draw.
Gabriella Xavier would step up first and easily score on Jamaica’s Captain and goalkeeper, Lorie-Ann McIntosh, with a drag to the left and reverse sweep while her sister Alysa Xavier stopped two Jamaican shooters.
Guyanese Captain Chantelle Wales stepped up to bury the Jamaicans with a diving finish to give Guyana the 4-2 penalty victory.
Apart from the match boosting Guyana into the playoff for fifth place versus Barbados, the victory was sweet redemption for Guyana who lost to Jamaica in the CAC games four years ago.
Meanwhile, Cuba upstaged Trinidad by 4-2 in the first women’s semi-final, while surprise of the tournament, the Dominican Republic, secured their place in the final with a 2-0 victory over hosts Mexico.
