[www.inewsguyana.com] – The Ministry of Public Security has extended the Gun Amnesty Programme by 14 days.
The Programme launched on September 1, was supposed to conclude on September 30, however it is now being extended to October 14.
This confirmation comes just a few hours after Public Security Minister and Vice President Khemraj Ramjattan had hinted at the possible extension of the Gun Amnesty Programme.
The Vice President revealed that in the last few days the program received a boom with more than 50% of the arms cache collected, coming in during that period.
“We have seen in the last couple of days, more than 50% of guns have come in as against the three previous weeks so I think there is public out there that understands the implications of not bringing it in,” said the Vice President.
He dubbed the initiative a “big success” noting that over 1500 pieces of ammunition and approximately 100 guns have been received by the police.
Persons can surrender guns and ammunition at police stations across the country between 9:00AM and 4:00PM.
