[www.inewsguyana.com] – The University of Guyana (UG) will have $60 million to spend over a three year period with a yearly disbursement of $20M.
The Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GT&T) Company and the University of Guyana signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) concreting the arrangement. Affixing their signatures was Chief Executive Officer of GT&T RK Sharma and Vice Chancellor of UG, Dr Jacob Opadeyi.
The money will be used for general development of the University’s Information Technology advancement, refurbishing of the centre for Information Technology and continued sponsorship of students in the area Technology and Natural Sciences.
CEO, Sharma in his remarks noted that the signing represents the strengthening of the relationship between the country’s premier telephone company and it premier education institution.
He said that the interest of GT&T in the University is to promote value for the stakeholders at the learning institution. The MoU represents the single largest financial donation that the telephone Company has ever given to an entity.
Meanwhile, Dr Opadeyi told the gathering of Senior Directors of GT&T that the move is a most welcome one which represents the commitment of the telephone Company to ensure that the University serves its purpose.
He said that the University of Guyana should be like every other University in the world where citizens call it their own and are willing to invest in same as it represents a national symbol. [Leroy Smith]
