[www.inewsguyana.com] – Shadow Finance Minister, Carl Greenidge has accused Guyana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Carolyn Rodrigues of fabricating information to the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva.

The Minister reportedly told the Council that Guyana’s unemployment rate is below 10%. In her report, she said growth in the past five years had averaged 4.75% with diversification and expansion of the economy which “has led to the reduction of unemployment to below 10% although we acknowledge that some sections of the country recorded higher levels.”

When asked for his response, Greenidge, who is also a Parliamentarian for A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) said, “Minister Rodrigues has a history as far as I’m concerned of fabricating information and I say this in all seriousness. You wouldn’t normally say this of a Minister but unfortunately we have such Ministers.”

The Shadow Finance Minister further noted, “Nowhere in Guyana will you find unemployment rate of 10 percent.”

Greenidge believes that the government is trying to impress outsiders.

“The Minister, domestically they can dream about all sorts of figures; and for purposes of impressing people outside, they go and do all sorts of things.”

Guyana’s human rights record was examined by the United Nations Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Working Group, at which Minister Rodrigues represented the country.
