[www.inewsguyana.com] – Opposition Leader David Granger has called on the incumbent People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) to desist from what he said was insistent damage being meted out to the Georgetown Mayor and City Council (M&CC) and to support the rehabilitation of the national capital.
According to the Opposition Leader, the City of Georgetown is in crisis and it is a well-known fact that Georgetown’s commercial, demographic and geographical expansion over the past four decades has been the major contributory factor to the present situation.
He said the M&CC must be empowered and equipped if it is to be enabled to respond to the challenge of managing a modern capital city.
“APNU calls on the PPP/C to re-engage the M&CC in a responsible manner. The PPP/C must demonstrate leadership in rehabilitating the infrastructure and restoring public pride in our capital City.”
He opined that the current crisis in the municipality is a consequence of several other crises including, the political crisis, the financial management crisis, the solid waste management crisis, the flood management crisis and the infrastructure maintenance crisis.
Granger said his party regards the state of the national capital as a national responsibility. “Georgetown’s problems, however, have arisen largely as a result of the PPP/C’s hostile attitude to the M&CC since the municipal elections of 1994” he added.
