[www.inewsguyana.com] – The Guyana Power and Light Inc (GPL) has agreed to reduce its electricity rates as a result of government’s decision to reduce fuel prices by 30 percent.

Cabinet Secretary, Dr Roger Luncheon told Reporters at a post cabinet media briefing on Wednesday, January 28, that GPL “is favourably disposed to accord with the President’s request for consideration of electricity charge decrease.”

Dr Luncheon, however could not say how much of a reduction GPL will impose or when it will take effect.

“The Company has undertaken to have electricity charges for consumers across the board adjusted…downwards,” the Cabinet Secretary said.

Initially, GPL had stated that it was not inclined to reduce its rates. Chief Executive Officer of GPL, Bharrat Dindyal had told iNews the low prices will have to be sustained and a licensing process, involving the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) would have to be undertaken if there was going to be a reduction.
