The Guyana Police Force (GPF) says it is mourning the death of inspector Ian Welch who died in an accident on Tuesday afternoon around 17:15hrs at “Rattle Snake Hill,Trail Road, Central Rupununi.”
According to information from the police, Welch and three other officers were in the police vehicle, on patrol duty, being driven by constable Lyzandel Northe when the vehicle experienced a ‘blow out’ of its right rear wheel, after which the driver reportedly lost control and the vehicle turned-turtle twice before it came to a halt.
The driver, constable Northe along with corporal Fitzgerald Adolphus, special constable Ryan Doris and rural constable Chavez Francis all received minor injuries, were treated and are being kept for observation at the Lethem Regional Hospital.
Inspector Welch however, who was seated in the front of the vehicle sustained severe injuries and was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
Welch ,38, of Rose Hall Town ,Corentyne, Berbice was married and joined the Force on May 5,1999.
According to the GPF he was recently recognized after being adjudged the third place winner of their Quarterly Essay Competition.
Welch’s body is currently at the hospital’s mortuary and a post mortem examination is expected to be done today.
Investigations are currently ongoing.
