Today the media learned that the projected cost for electricity per kilowatt hour to consumers for power generated from Sophia is US18 cents with the Amaila Falls Hydro Project.
Guyana is currently paying US31 cents. This was revealed today by Chairman of GPL’s Board, Winston Brassington, who was responding to a question posed by PPP/C parliamentarian Odinga Lumumba in the National Assembly during a joint meeting.
The cost for generation at the Amaila Hydro site is still estimated at between US10 and US12 cents. But it was underscored that all tariffs are subject to negotiation.
With the introduction of the hydropower plant, it is also anticipated that electricity costs would become less of a burden on government.
According to Prime Minister [PM] Samuel Hinds, GPL does not expect to call on government for support anymore.
However, it was explained that for those areas currently not serviced by GPL except for Linden that will not benefit from the hydro plant; it is expected that support for these places would continue.[Delicia Fletcher]
