The Government of Guyana has refuted what it said is a “false report” in the state-owned Guyana Chronicle that “Cabinet is on recess for about one month”.
The report appeared in the August 31st issue of the newspaper which also ventured an editorial opinion that the “entire Cabinet has taken a recess” during the invented, one month period.
Following is the text of a statement the Government issued this afternoon to debunk the false and misleading report in the Chronicle:
The Government of Guyana refutes as false a report in the state-owned Guyana Chronicle that “Cabinet is on recess for about one month”.
The report appeared in the August 31st issue of the newspaper which also ventured an editorial opinion that the “entire Cabinet has taken a recess” during the invented, one month period.
Cabinet last met on August 16th for its regular, periodic, weekly session which invariably lasts from 10am to 6pm. On that date it was decided to defer sittings on August 23rd and 30th to allow Cabinet Secretariat staff time-off.
It was also decided that the agenda for two sessions would be deferred to September 6th when Cabinet would meet again. During the interval a Sub-Committee of Cabinet would meet, as it has been doing, to process urgent matters, some of which require expression of “no objection”, and are mainly submissions from the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB).
The Cabinet Sub-Committee compromises H.E David Granger, President; Hon. Moses Nagamootoo, Prime Minister; Hon. Joseph Harmon, Minister of State and Secretary to Cabinet; Hon Winston Jordan, Minister of Finance; and Hon. David Patterson, Minister of Public Infrastructure. It is not true that Cabinet is on recess for a month.
In the meantime Cabinet and other Ministers continue their routine functions even though Government and Opposition Members of Parliament are on leave, resulting from the on-going, two-month, Parliamentary recess.
