A 51-year-old man on Friday appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan slapped with one count of break and enter.
Shadeek Mohammed called ‘Goldie’, of Crabwood Creek, Berbice in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) pleaded guilty to the charge which read that on March 7, at Brickdam, Georgetown, he stole one Perry Ellis reading glasses valued $260,000, tools valued $30,000 and one all purpose charger valued $3000; property of the Virtual Complainant (VC) Mohammed Khan.
The prosecution’s facts stated that the defendant and the VC are not known to each other. On the day in question at around 08:00hrs, the VC drove his car and parked it in the vicinity of the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts and left to run errands.
Upon his return at around 10:00hrs, he discovered that the front of his car was opened and upon inspection, noticed the aforementioned items were missing.
On asking, he was told by an eyewitness what had transpired. The defendant was subsequently identified and arrested. He later admitted to the offence.
When given an opportunity to speak in court, the defendant said “sorry”.
Magistrate McLennan fined him $70,000.
