Francisco De Mattos, 27, of Monkey Mountain was earlier today further remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan when he reappeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts charged with the murder of a Venezuelan citizen.
De Mattos was not required to plead to the indictable charge which alleged that on June 23, 2018 while at a bar at Black Water Landing in the Cuyuni River he murdered Rafael Angel Gonzalez Prieto.
According to facts presented to the court, on the day in question around 01:50h Prieto was stabbed to death by the gold miner after he (Prieto) allegedly assaulted his girlfriend at Black Water Backdam, Cuyuni.
Further, the report stated that the deceased lover was dancing with another male in the bar when he (Prieto) got annoyed and threw her to the ground, whipped out a knife and began cutting the woman’s hair.
Upon seeing same De Mattos got annoyed and rush to the aid of the woman which resulted in a scuffle between the two men. It was during that scuffle that he allegedly dealt his assailant several stabs, one of which caused his intestines to protrude through his stomach.
