A 22-year-old man was earlier today fined $40,000 when he appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Mark Gonsalves who was unrepresented, pleaded guilty with explanation to the charge which alleged that on Friday April 1, 2016 at Block ‘E’ South Sophia, Georgetown, he unlawfully assaulted Lorianne Hope so as to cause her actual bodily harm.
His explanation to the court was that his action stemmed from rage after discovering that his girlfriend was involved with another man.
However the virtual complainant, Lorainne Hope, told the court that she was attacked by the defendant on her way to work. She alleged that he grabbed her bag and threw it in a nearby trench then proceeded to bite her on the lips.
Gonsalves was fined $40,000 or will face a default of 14 days imprisonment upon failure to pay.
