The Ashmin’s Building on Hadfield and High Streets Georgetown that houses the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) Returning Officer’s Office is tightly locked, leaving international observers and political parties’ representatives contemplating their next move.

On Thursday evening, party representatives who remained at the office to safeguard the Statements of Polls for Region Four (Demerara Mahaica) were escorted out of the building by heavily armed police ranks. After they were out of the building the building was locked with GECOM officials inside.

Observers believe that it was an opportune time to tamper with the SOPs since there were no party agents present. However, the Chairman of the Commission, Justice Claudette Singh is still missing in action and as such, could not be served with injunctions to block the declaration of the unverified results for Region Four.

Since the release of the results late Thursday, the ABC countries have called for the rule of law to be followed and urged GECOM to resume the tabulation and verification process.

All other Electoral Observer Missions have also slammed the elections body for releasing the unverified results which they say are not credible and transparent.

In addition, the PPP/C and other Political Parties contesting the elections have called for international sanctions against the APNU/AFC coalition.
