[www.inewsguyana.com] – The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) says it is deliberately intensifying its stakeholder engagements targeting voters and potential contestants for the upcoming Local Government Elections (LGE).
This is being done as a major component of its Civic and Voter education strategy. According to a release, GECOM is currently arranging stakeholder meetings within all 62 Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) and the nine Municipalities in Guyana.
“In this regard, a meeting will be 8th of May Secondary School, Dartmouth, Essequibo Coast on Friday, November 27, 2015 at 17:00 hrs, and another at the Tagore High School, Corentyne, Berbice on Sunday, November 29, 2015 at 17:00 hrs.”
Among the pertinent issues that will be discussed at the meetings are the electoral systems for LGE, voting at LGE, criteria to contest the LGE, qualifications to be elected as Councillors and the importance of LGE.
The release stated that GECOM’s primary objective is to provide voters and contestants with comprehensive knowledge about Local Government Elections to aid efficient conduct of elections with maximum participation in a free, fair, and transparent manner.
“Notwithstanding the ‘roll out’ of this activity, GECOM hereby is prepared to meet with any Civil Society Organisation that may wish to discuss the above issues with the Commission.”
