A Guyana Defence Force (GDF) solider was yesterday charged at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts charged with the offence of having (15 grams of cannabis) narcotics in his possession.
The court heard that 25-year-old Troyston Cort was busted with the illicit substance by Police officials on patrol duty. A body search was conducted on the accused on March 23, 2017, at Stabroek Square, Georgetown and the illicit drug was reportedly discovered in one of his pockets while other portions were said to be contained in zip lock bags in his backpack.
Cort pleaded not guilty to the charge read by Magistrate Judy Latchman.
Defence Attorney Patrice Henry requested that the soldier be released on reasonable bail arguing that the drugs were never found on his client’s person.
Bail was granted in the sum of $70,000, with Magistrate Latchman adjourning the matter to April 10, when Cort is expected to again face the court.
