[www.inewsguyana.com] – Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on Friday, May 02 remanded a Guyana Defence Force Private attached to Coast Guard on a drug trafficking charge.
Zegga Phillips, 22 of Kuru Kuru Soesdyke, Linden Highway, pleaded not guilty to the offence, which alleged that on April 30 at Cheddi Jagan International Airport, (CJIA), Timehri, East Bank Demerara; he had in his possession 4.342 kilogrammes of cocaine.
Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) Prosecutor, Oswald Massiah said that on the day in question, around 02:30 hrs the Private was operating motorcar PLL 9026. He was hired to transport a passenger to the Airport and was instructed by the said passenger that they will pick up an incoming passenger.
The Court heard that Phillips was approached by a CANU officer who told him of his suspicions, when he flashed his ID at the officer informing him that he is a member of the army. However, with his consent a search was carried out by the officer and two black plastic bags containing four bricks of the illegal substance were found.
The Court heard that while under caution, Phillips tried to bribe the CANU Officer, saying “Let’s work out something buddy”.
Phillips was represented by Attorney – at – Law, Patrice Henry, who requested bail in a reasonable sum for his client. He said the defendant resides with his parents at the address mentioned and strongly denied the allegations.
Bail was denied and the matter was transferred Providence Court for May 15.
