[www.inewsguyana.com] – The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) has launched a search and rescue operation in order to find missing Pomeroon farmer, Orton Benjamin, following a collision involving a vessel of the GDF in the Pomeroon river.
A press statement from the Defence Force noted that the GDF-led operation is utilising specialist equipment and the services of divers. It was noted that the Force is in contact with the Mr. Benjamin’s family and will provide them with all necessary assistance during this difficult time.
Meanwhile, it was noted that Chief of Staff, Brigadier Mark Phillips has ordered an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident involving the GDF vessel and Mr Benjamin’s boat.
“The Guyana Defence Force deeply regrets this unfortunate incident and will remain engaged in the search for Mr Benjamin until he is recovered,” the statement noted.
iNews had reported that the accident took place at St Johns in the lower Pomeroon River on Wednesday, June 24. According to reports, Benjamin was taking his wife and young child to school in his boat when the two vessels collided.
The boat, captained by Benjamin, was reportedly hit by the Coast Guard vessel which was proceeding to Charity, resulting in Benjamin falling overboard, never to resurface.
