[www.inewsguyana.com] – Two friends appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on Friday, December 11, after a single punch saw one of them undergoing reconstructive surgery.
Twenty-three – year old Lawrence Barnes of Lot 13 Henry Street, Werk-en-rust, Georgetown was charged with malicious wounding. The court heard that on December 04 between Durban Street and Henry Street, Georgetown, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded the Virtual Complainant (VC), Shivraj Parmanand with the intent to maim, disfigure, disable or to cause him grievous bodily harm.
Barnes pleaded guilty with an explanation. Police Prosecutor, Deniro Jones related that on the day in question at about 19:00 hrs both men were drinking when a heated argument ensued between the two over a bottle that was thrown in the VC’s direction.
The accused then dealt the VC two punches to his face causing injuries. The VC was required to undergo emergency surgery to his right eye. The Magistrate reprimanded both of the men and ordered the accused to compensate the VC with $50,000 on or before December 18 or risk an alternative of four weeks in prison. She also advised that they make a written agreement for the outstanding compensation.
