[www.inewsguyana.com] – Region 5 saw a significant boost in its development as the extension to the Fort Wellington Secondary School was commissioned by Minister of Education Priya Manickchand on Monday (October 21).

After the school was completed in September 2011, there was an issue with accommodating all the students at the institution. According to Headmistress, Yonette Walters, the students of Grade 7 at the time were situated at the Fort Wellington Boardroom for learning sessions.

However in 2012, the contract to commence work on the extension building was approved. The extension was completed this year and at present, there are 135 Grade 7 students being accommodated.

At the commissioning ceremony, Ms. Walters stated that the students are now comfortable and will be able to grasp more in the improved learning environment. Ms. Walters also assured the gathering that the performance of the students will be improved with this innovation.

Meanwhile, Regional Educational Officer (REO) of Region 5 Mr. Owen Pollard in his remarks appealed to the students to take care of the infrastructure. According to the REO, his office will do its best to meet the needs of the school. Additionally, Minister Manickchand in her feature address stated that Region 5 is right where it is supposed to be as it has acquired Universal Secondary Education. The Minister appealed to the students to be conscious about keeping the school clean and safe so that others can benefit.
