Bynoe was accompanied by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation’s (UNESCO) Secretary General, Ms Patrice LaFleur.

The purpose of the meeting, Bynoe indicated, was to discuss UNFPA’s work plan for 2018 with First Lady, identify areas of potential partnership and to familiarise himself with initiatives implemented by First Lady’s Office.

“…It’s fitting, giving that today is International Women’s Day to recognise the tremendous work that she [First Lady] has been doing with respect to women and girls so I am interested in learning a little bit more on that and of course sharing with her, our work plan for 2018 and looking for areas to possibly collaborate as we look to address issues affecting women and girls in Guyana,” Bynoe said.

UNFPA is the world’s largest international source of funding for population and reproductive health programmes. The Fund works with governments at their request to support national development programmes that aim to achieve access to sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights, reduce maternal mortality and reduce adolescent pregnancy by 20 % during 2014-2019.
