A Cane Grove, East Coast Demerara (ECD) supermarket was early this morning gutted by fire, resulting in millions of dollars in losses.
Reports indicate that the Congenial Super Centre, which is located directly opposite the Cane Grove Police Station, went up in flames at around 03:00hrs today.
The fire which is suspected to have been the work of arsonists, completely ravaged the bottom flat of the two-storey building.
According to the owner of the business, Rohan Itwaru, he was awakened by his brother-in-law who informed him that the building was on fire.
He related that a container which consisted of diesel was found on a bread rack in the store, noting that his supermarket does not sell diesel.
Itwaru, who was visibly devastated, estimated his losses to be in excess of $40 million.
The owner’s wife told INews that the surveillance cameras which are situated in front of the Supermarket, facing the Police Station, were all turned upwards hence nothing regarding the incident was recorded.
An investigation has been launched into the matter.
