Sixteen persons are homeless after three houses were destroyed between Camp and Quamina Streets around 15:00 hrs today, Saturday July 6.
The Guyana fire Service responded promptly to extinguish the blaze but was unable to save anything.
Jacqueline Soares is one of four homeless of Lot 4 Quamina Street. Soares related that she was inside her house when she heard a loud explosion. She was home alone.
She lived there for the past 37 years.
On checking what was happening, persons on the road shouted to the occupants of the three houses to get out as quickly as possible.
Another resident related that the three properties were sold to National Hardware boss who bought if from deceased Ricardo Rodriguez
According to reports, two months ago the boss of National Hardware approached the residents and demand that everyone in the three yards must relocate.
Margo Ellisa, another homeless resident related that she saved her small bottle of jewellery and cell phone from the blaze.
Investigations into the matter is ongoing.
