DSC05164A father of two was today sentenced to three years in jail along with a fine of $30,000 when he appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman charged with the offence of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.

Twenty – seven – year old Dousy Skeete pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that on September 05 at Mabura Public Road, West Bank Demerara he had 470 grams of cannabis on his possession for the purpose of trafficking. According to particulars of the case, on the day in question, police were on patrol when they stopped motor car HC 1283 and conducted a search.

During the search, the police observed the accused acting in a suspicious manner after which they conducted a search on his person and personal belongings when they discovered the cannabis in a plastic bag which the accuse claimed to be his.

When the accused was given the opportunity to speak, he told the court that the cannabis was indeed his and it is his first offence. Skeete said he had applied for a job in Linden for the past three months and did not receive a response, as he noted that he has two children to take care of and that was his only alternative.

The accused further begged and pleaded with the Magistrate for leniency. Without much deliberation, the Magistrate sentenced the accused and instituted her fine after taking into consideration all factors of the case. [Royan Abrams]
