Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the kidnapping of a newborn girl which occurred on November 24 at around 20:45hrs at the Tuschen Squatting Area, West Coast Demerara (WCD).
The mother, a 19-year-old, told investigators that she was breast-feeding at home when the child’s father – whom she shared a relationship with – appeared in the house and demanded that she hand over the baby.
The teen mom said she refused to hand over the child, which caused the man to whip out a handgun and point it in her direction. The father then took the baby and escaped.
The matter was reported to the police and ranks immediately began searching for the suspect. He was later intercepted in public transportation, with the baby in his possession.
In fact, the baby was being held by a female passenger in the vehicle. They were all taken to the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station where they were questioned.
The female passenger claimed that she does not know the suspect and that he asked her to hold the baby just before the lawmen stopped the vehicle. The suspect confirmed the woman’s story.
The father remains in police custody and the child was handed over to the mother.
When contacted, Public Relations Officer of the Guyana Police Force Royston Andries-Junor confirmed that investigations are ongoing into the matter.
