The Guyana Police Force yesterday reported that its ‘Operation Safeway’ is continuing to “yield positive results” since its implementation on September 15, 2016.
According to the GPF, accident figures from September 15th to October 6th, 2016 have shown “a remarkable decrease in all categories”, relative to the same period last year as follows:
Fatal – decreased by 44.4%
Serious – decreased by 47%
Minor – decreased by 21.4%
Damage – decreased by 40%
Further, 4,250 cases have been made for the period, of which 1,371 persons were charged with speeding; 1,863 were tested for alcohol of which 274 of them were charged, having been found to be above the prescribed limit.
254 of those charged with driving under the influence were tested by night and 20 by day.
The remaining 2,605 cases were for other various traffic offences.
All kudos to the GPF, but can they make Safeway the norm, or just a flash in the pan.!! Continuity at this new efficint level is the way forward.
