Family members of the late Osmond Fiedtkou are concerned and livid over the fact that the man convicted for their loved one’s murder has managed to escape from the Mazaruni Prison in Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni).
“How is it possible. How did four high profile prisoners, criminals who committed murder, escape from the prison? We need answers,” a very concerned relative, who spoke under the condition of anonymity, told this publication.
“Persons need to be held accountable for this. Too often we’re seeing reports of people escaping from these prisons. Why does this keep happening?”
Imran Ramsaywack, Kenrick Lyte, Samuel Gouveia and Rayon Jones are wanted by the police for escaping from the Mazaruni Prison today.
Lyte was in 2019 sentenced to death by Justice Sandil Kissoon, after he was found guilty by a 12-member jury, of the murder of 72-year-old Osmond Fiedtkou. Lyte was charged in 2014 for the offence. The incident had occurred at Groete Creek, Essequibo River between July 9 and 13, 2014. Reports are that Lyte had owed Fiedtkou money and he was refusing to repay. Fiedtkou was reportedly angry with Lyte, which led to them arguing. The court had heard that Lyte shot the pensioner to the chest with a shotgun. Lyte then threw away the gun and sank the boat in an attempt to cover up his crime.
“We waited so long to get justice for this heinous crime. How can we just sit back and be at ease knowing that this criminal is roaming free,” Osmond’s family member posited.
The Guyana Prison Service, in a statement, explained that at about 07:15hrs during the unlocking of the Brick Prison (Solitary Division) supervised by the Duty Officer and four other ranks, it was observed that the padlock to the entrance gate was tampered with, and further checks revealed that two bars within the cell were cut.
The Emergency Action Plan with the respect of the escaping of inmates was immediately activated.
A Joint Patrol was established at the outer perimeter of the prison and a search has been launch by the Joint Services to recapture the four escapees. Water, air and land patrols are currently be conducted.
