[www.inewsguyana.com] – During the first Quarter of 2015, the Ministry of Home Affairs will launch the Expert Advisory Committee on Alternative Sentencing.
Home Affairs Minister, Clement Rohee told a news conference on Wednesday, December 31 that the Committee will comprise of the Director of Public Prosecutions, a representative of the Judiciary, the Officer in Charge of Welfare and Correction, Guyana Prison Service, a sociologist, a criminologist, an economist and a psychiatrist.
Their main function would be to make recommendations to modify the laws as it relates to alternative sentencing.
Alternative sentencing or non-custodial sentence is a collective name in criminal justice for all the different ways, in which courts can punish someone, convicted of committing an offence, other than the custodial sentence (serving a prison term).
